Russia extracts anticancer materials from tropical

MISIS, the Russian State Research Technical University, has developed a technology for preparing zinc oxide nanorods. The new materials made by this technology have unique antibacterial and anticancer properties, and have good application prospects in the field of biomedicine. The findings were recently published in the journal Materials Chemistry and Physics. To make the new material, the researchers used an extract from the leaves of the Sapinaceae plant found in tropical forests. The thorn is a large evergreen or deciduous tree with milky milk and some shrubs, of which there are about 70 species in total. To prepare the extract, the researchers collected young leaves of T. japonica from tropical forests in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands of India, said Kolesnikov, an engineer at MISIS's Department of Functional Nanosystems and High-Temperature Materials. The leaves were washed, dried, ground, and the extract was prepared at 80°C. Afterwards, an alternative approach was successfully developed to obtain anticancer and antibacterial properties using this extract as a stabilizer (which acts as an oxidizing or reducing agent during acetate decomposition) in the synthesis of ZnO nanorods drug.
